Yasiin Bey Shocks Talib Kweli With Black Star Reunion Album Announcement

Brooklyn duo Black Star is composed of lyrical legends Yasiin Bey, formerly known as Mos Def, and Talib Kweli. The wordsmiths dropped their only studio album, Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star, back in 1998, and have since collaborated on various tracks over the years. Still, fans have been asking for an official reunion, and it looks as if their wishes may come true.

Bey recently announced a follow-up to the hip-hop classic, which HipHopDX reports was a surprise to Kweli. Still, he’s optimistic the long-awaited project will come to fruition.

“It looks like it might happen,” Kweli told the site. “I found out on the internet the same way y’all did. We’ve been talking about doing an album with Madlib for years. That’s been an idea we’ve had for so long, but for him to make that announcement … I didn’t know he was going to make the announcement.”

Kweli went on, “He went to a Madlib show and he got hype. It’s not like we discussed it and said, ‘Ok, we’re going to announce it.’ I got off the plane, I landed and was like, ‘Oh ok.’ It’s an idea we have been discussing for a long time, now we just gotta make it happen.”

The Black on Both Sides MC made the surprising announcement during a Madlib DJ set in Denver.
