Craig Melvin, NBC, Today Show

Craig Melvin recently stepped down as the Saturday co-anchor of NBC’s Weekend Today.  In an announcement made on-air Tuesday (Sept.4) morning, it was revealed that the correspondent would be promoted to the weekday segment of the Today show.

Melvin periodically appeared on the weekday show in the past. In June, he asked former President Bill Clinton about Monica Lewinsky in the wake of the Me Too movement. However, on Aug. 27, the South Carolina native began appearing on Today on a daily basis. Now, he has officially been added to the cast as a news anchor and will join co-hosts Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie.

“Craig stepped away from ‘Weekend Today’ so he can be with us every morning, and we’re so happy to have him here,” Guthrie said during the subtle announcement.

Melvin started the morning segment by showing appreciation to his family. “I want to thank my parents, who sacrificed so much for me to go to school and get here. My wife and kids … they’ve given me life.”

He also said he was happy to work under a veteran reporter such as Al Roker and that Kotb and Guthrie are the “sisters” he never had.
