Sunday night belonged to the ladies and gents behind Curvy Girls Rock (CGR), a new web series featuring five plus-size leads, living and loving their voluptuous figures in New Jack City.

Cast and crew came through drippin’ in their finest for the red-carpet screening at The Slope Lounge in Brooklyn, New York. Series creator, writer and director Shakesha Williams lead the charge, rocking a gorgeous leopard-print suit from event sponsor, Lane Bryant.

The original runway diva herself, Sharon Quinn, held down red-carpet hosting duties. The hilarious plus-size trailblazer kept the energy high as attendees packed the house, including the fabulous cast of CGR. Cast in attendance included leading ladies Ellisha Marie, Naimah Terry, Jessica Barrish, Zoë Goslin and Tamala Baldwin, as well as several supporting cast and crew.

Guests enjoyed a CGR-themed drink menu, including the “Curvy Girls Margarita” and the “Thick & Sexy Mule.” The delicious eats included jerk shrimp skewers, mac & cheese and mango guava wings so good, I’ll be back next week.

Shortly before the screening, guests were treated to a scorching performance from dance troupe Figure 8. The sultry collective was followed by singer Danni Baylor, whose original song “Just Me,” is featured on the CGR Season One soundtrack.

As the lights began to dim, fans cheered for the new show dedicated to portraying thick women as confident, sensual and intelligent bosses who refuse to let stereotypes dictate how they move through the world. Episodes one and two include real and raw conversations between the ladies about everything from love and divorce to career moves and body confidence. The series also negates the troupes often associated with bigger women on-screen, including an obsession with dieting or complaining that men pay them no mind. Quite the opposite, these ladies pack plenty of sex appeal, and they know it.

“I wanted the passion to be seen with a bigger woman,” Williams shared with EBONY. “I wanted to see someone like me because I’ve had an amazing sex life. Other women I know who are plus-size have amazing sex lives, so why are we hidden in the shadows? We’re beautiful! Why can’t we be seen in our full element like every other actress on the planet?”

Maddy Jones of Plus Model Magazine wrapped up the night with a cast Q&A, with Williams sharing the primary motivation behind creating the show.

“I created Curvy Girls Rock because I believe it is important for women to see representations of themselves in the media, The series will prove that plus size women can be romantic leading ladies who are beautiful, sexy, smart and sophisticated.”
