Comedian D.L. Hughley is busy promoting new book, How Not to Get Shot, stopping by The View to share his first childhood interaction with police.
According to the Los Angeles native, while walking with his friend at 8 years old, police pulled up to them, asking if they knew anything about a criminal on the loose.
“I’m walking down the street, me and my best friend, and police screech up to us and ask ‘Where’s such and such?’ We said, ‘We don’t know!’”
After telling the officer they didn’t know anything, they were instructed to place their hands on the hood of the cop car. Hughley did so, but complained that the car was hot, resulting in the cop threatening to kill him if he didn’t comply.
“’N-word, if you take your hand off this car, I’m going to blow your head off.”
Hughley went on, “We’ve been murdered for reading, for looking somebody in the eye, for whistling at somebody. The murder of black people at the hands of people of authority has always happened… police [are] doing what they’ve always done, which is … keeping you in your community where you belong.”
