Get Out star Daniel Kaluuya has been cast in the leading role of Queen & Slim, a romance drama written by The Chi creator Lena Waithe, according to Variety.

The movie explores “America’s social and political climate through the lens of a genre-defying love story,” reports Variety.  It centers on a Black man and woman who go on the run after killing a cop in self-defense during their first date.

“To me, this is protest art,” Waithe said. “It’s about being black and trying to fall in love in a world that’s burning down around you.” The Emmy Award-winning writer based the script on an original idea and treatment from best-selling author James Frey.

Director Melina Mastoukas, best known for Beyoncé’s Formation video and her work on TV series Master of None and Insecure, will be making her feature debut. The film “defines black love as a revolutionary act. It shows that our union is the greatest weapon against the assault on black people in America,” she said in a press release.

While Oscar-nominated Kaluuya will play Slim in the Bonnie and Clyde-inspired love story, the role of Queen has yet to be cast. Queen & Slim is scheduled for pre-production in October and filming will begin in January.
