Denzel Washington is not just a megastar on the big screen; he also performs superbly on the stage, selling tickets and garnering awards for his performances. According to Forbes, his latest play, The Iceman Cometh, brought in $1.1 million in ticket sales during its first full week of performances. It is the first time this American classic’s ticket sales has reached seven figures.

The Tony Award-winning actor stars in the revival of the Eugene O’Neill play, which is directed by George C. Wolfe and produced by Scott Rudin. The four-hour-long play is a big production, employing a cast of 26. In addition to booming ticket sales, the play has also snagged eight Tony Award nominations including Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role.

Washington’s last three stints on Broadway have made sizable profits. His 2005 revival of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar recouped its $3 million investmentFences, for which he won the  Best Actor in a PlayTony in 2010, earned back its $2.8 million capitalization within eight weeks of performances. In 2014, Washington played the leading role in Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun, which returned its investment of $2.4 million in just two months. The Yonkers native proves to be worth millions on Broadway.

The Iceman Cometh began April 26 and will run for 14 weeks.
