The legal team representing rapper DMX, whose given name is Earl Simmons, in his tax evasion case is asking the judge to listen to two of his most heart-wrenching tracks to “understand him genuinely.”

The Seattle Times reports attorney Murray Richman asked the court to listen to the Ruff Ryder’s songs “Slippin’” and “The Convo” to gain a better understanding of the man behind the mic.

“It is raw Earl,” Richman said in court documents. “We are not here or desirous of molding him into what some may want to see; Earl is uniquely him and that is both his beauty of mind and his genius.”

Richman hopes the songs will persuade the judge to take it easy on the rapper, who owes $1.7 million to Uncle Sam in back taxes. Ideally, he would like the judge to send the Yonkers artist to rehab instead of prison.

“For any plan to be successful we must get Mr. Simmons back to work and in a healthy manner,” the lawyer told Page Six. “He is one of the few people who indeed can achieve the restitution and make the government whole.”
