Paramount Television President Amy Powell was fired on Thursday after she allegedly made racial remarks during a meeting about developing a television adaptation of First Wives Club, according to Deadline.

Variety reports, an anonymous source said Powell, “made statements about Black women being angry for various reasons” during a conference call about the film. It is claimed that a Black assistant to another executive, who was on the line, alerted human resources about the alleged racially charged comments. The publication also wrote Powell was seemingly responding to a tweet by Tracy Oliver, who is the Black showrunner for First Wives Club. The twitter message was a critique on the casting of the show.

Several employees made complaints about the alleged incident, which prompted an internal investigation. Chairman of Paramount Pictures, Jim Gianopulos, announced Powell’s termination in a memo.

“Having spent the past several days conducting a thorough investigation into this matter and speaking to those who were present, our Human Resources and Legal teams came to the same conclusion, and we have made the decision to terminate Amy’s employment, effective immediately,” Gianopulos wrote.

Powell responded to her firing and denied making any racial remarks. “There is no truth to the allegation that I made insensitive comments in a professional setting — or in any setting,” she said. “The facts will come out and I will be vindicated.”

She held her position as president of the company for five years.
