Many have speculated what DJ Khaled‘s role in the music industry actually is. Jack White is the latest person to take aim at the producer over his “Wild Thoughts” record with Rihanna and Bryson Tiller.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, the musician says the record which peaked at number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 is “just Santana’s song in its entirety.”

Khaled’s 2017 single samples Carlos Santana’s 1999 Grammy-winning hit “Maria, Maria” featuring The Product G&B. The song was produced by Wyclef and Jerry Duplessis. With the heavy presence of the original melodies on “Wild Thoughts,” White challenges DJ Khaled’s role as a producer with a bit of sarcasm.

“It was nice of DJ Khaled to sit down and write and perform and record that – that was good of him! He’s an incredibly talented man. There’s no doubt about that. He does so much!” Jack states.

During the opening of the Grammy performance of the record in January, Khaled shouted, “They said I’d never perform at the Grammys. They played themselves”.

White responded to Khaled’s take saying, “He said, ‘They told me I would never be on the Grammys.’ Really? Like, ‘Hey, man, like, I know you’re headed to lunch, but I just wanted to let you know that you’ll never be on the Grammys!’”

DJ Khaled has addressed questions of his role in the creation of his hits in the past referring to himself as being in “Quincy Jones mode.” His primary goal is to bring the best out of the artists on his records.

Jack White’s third studio album Boarding House Reach is set to be released on March 23.
