Get. Out!
On Sunday, Jordan Peele made history at the 90th Academy Awards when he became the first black screenwriter to win Best Original Screenplay.
Peele won for his culturally defining hit, Get Out, which made $176 million at the domestic box office. He was also nominated for Best Director and as a producer for the movie.
“I stopped writing this movie about 20 times because I thought it was impossible, I thought it wasn’t going to work,” said Peele during his acceptance speech. “I kept coming back to it because I knew if someone let me make this movie that people would hear it and people would see it.”
Peele was one of four black screenwriters nominated for an Oscar in its 90-year history. Suzanne de Passe (Lady Sings the Blues), Spike Lee (Do the Right Thing) and John Singleton (Boyz N the Hood) were previously nominated.
Peele tweeted his shock at winning an Academy Award.
