After taking home the Rule Breaker of the Year award at Billboard Women in Music, Kehlani shared a vintage visual for her latest single, “Honey.”
Directed by David Camarena, the honey-coated video hones in on intimate moments between Kehlani and her girlfriend, played by newcomer Aarianna Johnson. The two get up close and personal in between shots of buzzing bees, clouds and leaves.
“I like my girls just like I like my honey,” she sings, backed by an acoustic guitar. Soon a passionate kiss follows and as it lingers, the sun sets behind them and closes out the video.
A supporter of female empowerment, the video carried a strong message of perception and womanhood. “There were particular reasons why I chose [Aarianna Johnson] for this video,” she wrote. “This song was inspired by an androgynous woman, and I wanted to find someone who fell in line with that, who was ‘hard’ yet so so soft (yes, like a bee). I was asked ‘why not use a feminine girl?’ , but I knew I wanted to honor the inspiration, and paint the picture of the sweet tender aspect that shines through every woman, no matter what. Thank you for doing this @beingspontaneous she killed her first video job everyone!”
