Last weekend’s episode of Saturday Night Live ended with musical guest Kanye West inviting the cast back on stage for an un-televised speech praising Donald Trump and criticizing the “liberal media.” He also claimed SNL staffers tried to “bully” him into not wearing his MAGA hat.

While most of the cast were forced to awkwardly endure West’s latest rant, 16-year SNL vet Kenan Thompson was already out of the door, sharing on Late Night With Seth Meyers that he was able to leave early.

“[West] voiced his opinion very loudly…we’re all entitled to our opinion. I don’t know if that’s the moment necessarily to hold people hostage like that,” Thompson said of West bringing everyone back out. “As soon as [West] said ‘hey join me up onstage everybody,’ I was like ‘Oh, there goes the little cheese in the mousetrap, it’s going down.’”

Thompson left early in an attempt to see West’s final performance on television, but praised his co-workers for taking West’s digs on the chin.

“It’s hard to stand there and not be able to debate somebody who’s going so far against your personal opinion as well, and just stand there and take it,” he said. “We try to cater to the host, make sure they have a good show…when musical guests come in and are a little bit crazy, we let them have that, but we don’t judge.”
