Kendrick Lamar just made history by becoming “the first non-classical or jazz artist to win” a Pulitzer Prize for music for his album Damn.

On Monday, the Pulitzer board awarded the Lamar the prize because Damn was able to capture the “complexity of African-American life,” according to the Associated Press.

The critically acclaimed album earned the rapper four Grammy Award wins earlier this year, including “Best Rap Album.”
