Queen Sugar is set to return for its second season with a two-night event on June 20 and June 21st on OWN. This season, Ava DuVernay will be joined by a set of all women directors including Kat Chandler, DeMane Davis, Cheryl Dune, Aurora Guerrero and Amanda Marsalis. Today, OWN announced that legendary filmmaker Julie Dash (Daughters of the Dust) will be joining the director’s team. This marks Dash’s first return to television since she directed the 2002 TV film, The Rosa Parks Story. She will direct multiple episodes this season.
In the contemporary drama’s second season, Bordelon siblings Nova (Rutina Wesley), Charley (Dawn-Lyen Gardner) and Ralph Angel (Kofi Siriboe) struggle to move forward with their lives as they strive to honor the legacy of their father following his unexpected passing. Together, they must learn to rely on one another as they navigate their tenuous bonds as family. The expansive cast also includes Nicholas L. Ashe (Micah), Omar J. Dorsey (Hollywood), Dondré T. Whitfield (Remy), Timon Kyle Durrett (Davis), Bianca Lawson (Darla), Ethan Hutchison (Blue), and Tina Lifford (Aunt Violet). Additionally, guest star Henry G. Sanders (“Rocky Balboa”) recurs as Prosper Denton. Queen Sugar is based on the book by Natalie Baszile.
Still, Julie Dash joining the all-female team of directors isn’t the only exciting news about the forthcoming season of Queen Sugar.
Sharon Lawrence will play Lorna, Charley Bordelon’s mother. Sophisticated, charismatic, and complicated, Lorna is a successful, self-motivated businesswoman who raised her daughter to never settle for second best. Alimi Ballard will play Dr. Robert Dubois, an epidemiologist who works at The Center for American Progress. Sincere, charming and intellectual, Dr. Dubois makes a lasting impression on Nova. Margot Bingham will play Tamar Judith, a cool and confident pop singer who crosses paths with Davis.
