Chicago’s South Side is getting the network treatment with a new Showtime drama, spearheaded by the multi-hyphenate creative Lena Waithe and rapper/actor Common.

The Chicago natives will serve as executive producers for The Chi, an hourlong coming-of-age story that follows six South Siders. The pilot concept was shot and received a green light from the network in 2015, but has since been revamped and Rick Famuyiwa ( Dope) is now attached to direct the premiere.

Full of excitement, cast and crew are beginning to arrive in the Windy city to start filming the series. Jason Mitchell (Straight Outta Compton, Keanu) stars as Brandon, who dreams of opening a restaurant but faces conflict as he tries to elevate his life but still care for his alcohol-addicted mother Laverne played by Sonja Sohn (The Wire) and charismatic younger brother, Coogie, played by Jahking Guillory (Kicks).

In other good news, Moonlight co-star Alex R. Hibbert is also set to have a role in the new series. The details of his character have yet to be released.

Filming is scheduled to run through September.
