"Nas Album Done"

“Last I checked I was still breathing.” That was just one of the lines Nas, the Illmatic emcee, dropped on DJ Khaled’s latest hit, Nas Album Done.”

The song, which appears on DJ Khaled’s latest album Major Keys, immediately excited fans, not only because it flipped a dope sample from the Fugees, but also because the Queens rapper hinted that he’d be dropping a new album soon.

In “Nas Album Done,” Nasir Jones reminds music fans why he’s one of the greatest.

“A divine leader, shine brighter/Bonita mami, meet a line sniffer/Never, poetic rhyme writer, chiefer/Ebony empress getter,” Nas raps, letting it be known he’s fresher than ever despite being in the game for over two decades.

While Nas can certainly brag with the best of them, what sets him apart is his ability to make fans dance and think all at once. In “Nas Album Done” he gets political, taking a jab at Donald Trump before imploring his fans–and fellow rappers–to support Black businesses.

“To all my ghost supporters, go support us/Like a local Black-owned grocery store/‘Cause in the hood shit ain’t passed down through blood/It’s a dub on that, we get government aid/Spend it at they stores, puttin’ they kids through college
We need balance/So we can lease and own deeds in our projects/So I’m askin’ Gs to go in their pockets/The racial economic inequality, let’s try to solve it.”

Nas’ commitment to Black entrepreneurs isn’t just talk either. This year he threw his support behind up-and-coming Black filmmaker Steven Caple Jr. and produced The Land, a coming of age tale about teens in Cleveland. And he’s also invested in several Black-owned companies, like Tristan Walker‘s shaving brand Bevel.

But back to the video.

Khaled and Nas took it to the Caribbean to shoot a tropical-themed short film that starred another hip hop classic, Ox from the film Belly. Now, that’s a major key! And Twitter users loved it.
