Fans of the NBA Live series will be able to make female characters for the first time in the upcoming NBA Live 19, ESPN reports.

Women characters will be available in the game’s main mode “The One,” which follows a player as they make their way through the league, the mode’s create-a-player option will include women, a space that’s been traditionally dominated by men.

Female characters in sports games have been fairly limited, with gamers mainly only having the option to play as women in NHL and UFC-related games.

“We wanted to make sure that our females were on the same footing as the males,” “NBA Live 19” producer Mike Mahar told ESPN. “They can play online in our head-to-head circuits, as well as in Pro-Am.”

According to a 2013 study, 48 percent of gamers are women, with women older than 18 making up a larger percentage of gamers than boys who are 18 and younger, per The Washington Post.

“EA Sports continues to empower and inspire female athletes through their video games, and we are thrilled to see their steadfast commitment to inclusion and self-expression come to life in ‘NBA Live 19’,” WNBA president Lisa Borders said in a statement to ESPN.
