At 41-2, with 27 knockouts, Paul Williams' career as a professional boxer held a lot of promise. Unfortunately, the pugilist with the famed left-handed hook was recently involved in a motorcycle accident that left the boxer with no feeling below his waist. The 30-year-old fighter is scheduled to undergo surgery to protect and repair his spinal cord. Williams' promoter, Dan Goossen, said he was told by Williams' manager, Al Haymon, and trainer, George Peterson, that Williams apparently swerved to avoid contact with a vehicle Sunday and lost control of his motorcycle.
"Riding a motorcycle can be treacherous," Gooseen said. "I'm told Paul is in good spirits considering what has happened." The 6-foot-1 Williams can best be described as an active punching southpaw who could fight anywhere between welterweight and middleweight. He was scheduled to fight in September against Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.
Oscar De La Hoya, president of Golden Boy Promotions, which handles Alvarez, tweeted, "To Paul williams.On behalf of my family and I, stay strong my friend hang on to the love of your family, our hearts and prayers are with u."
