The people love Prince so much that they started a petition to make his birthday, June 7, a state holiday in Minnesota. And this comes on the heels of a touching D’Angelo tribute to the Purple One, plus Eric Clapton being as eloquent as possible in discussing Prince’s musical abilities.

First up, D’Angelo on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, performing “Sometimes It Snows In April” with help from Maya Rudolph. If you haven’t seen it already, get your ‘kerchief ready.

Eric Clapton also posted on Facebook about how Prince saved him from himself. Clapton wrote: “”I’m so sad about the death of Prince, he was a true genius, and a huge inspiration for me, in a very real way….

In the eighties, I was out on the road in a massive downward spiral with drink and drugs, I saw Purple Rain in a cinema in Canada, I had no idea who he was, it was like a bolt of lightning!…

In the middle of my depression, and the dreadful state of the music culture at that time it gave me hope, he was like a light in the darkness…

I went back to my hotel, and surrounded by empty beer cans, wrote Holy Mother….

I can’t believe he’s gone….”

If Clapton lived in Minnesota he probably would support the change.org petition asking people to digitally sign their name so that the request can be forwarded to Governor Mark Dayton. It is possible that such a request could only be considered legit if signed by that state’s residents and if entered into the state administrative docket as a request by an elected official, but still it’s a very nice and thoughtful touch by Prince fans.

Another petitioner calls for a street to be named after Prince, plus a special education fund that would go, most likely, toward music.

Currently Minnesota only celebrates federal holidays such as Christmas and Labor Day. But who knows? Perhaps Prince day is a’coming.
