Netflix announced Thursday that Scandal creator Shonda Rhimes and Batman director Matt Reeves are developing a feature film and “television universe” for Recursion, an upcoming sci-fi novel by Blake Crouch.
According to Variety, the novel, which will be published June 11, is about an invention by a female scientist that allows people to reactivate or reinvent their memories.
“Projects like this are why I came to Netflix,” Rhimes said. The television writer and producer left ABC network and signed a massive $100 million deal with the streaming platform. Recursion will be her first project under the signing.
The five-time NAACP winner continued, “The opportunity to explore a multi-genre universe in innovative ways is extremely exciting. Matt and Blake both have the tremendous ability to build compelling characters and imaginative landscapes and I am thrilled to work alongside them.”
Reeves celebrated working with Rhimes saying, “Netflix is uniquely suited for this ambitious undertaking, and I can’t imagine a more exciting partner than the astonishingly talented Shonda Rhimes whose work I have admired for years.”
