Multi-hyphenated entertainer Steve Harvey, along with his wife, Marjorie Harvey, are pushing forward with their joint initiative to help promote mentorship in the Black community by bringing their Steve Harvey Mentoring Campaign to the New York metropolitan area this weekend.
Created in partnership between the Steve and Marjorie Harvey Foundation and the Open Society Foundation’s Campaign for Black Male Achievement, the campaign works alongside local organizations to create and further expand mentoring relationships between young African American boys and Black men. Additional sponsors include NBC, Big Brothers Big Sisters, National CARES Mentoring Movement, Mentoring USA, the Newark Mentoring Movement, and various historically Black fraternities. The Steve & Marjorie Harvey Foundation’s mentoring initiatives has thus far served over 1,000 young men and women around the country.
On the program, Steve Harvey said in a press release: “I’ve seen first-hand what a powerful impact mentoring can have on our youth. To empower the next generation, the guidance and wisdom that mentors provide is a one-of-a-kind experience that can’t be found in any classroom. Anyone has the power to become a mentor, and one person can spark a change in the lives of young men now, building a brighter future together with the next generation.”
The latest major mentor recruitment drive will take place on March 23rd in conjunction with the leading faith-based mentoring initiative Trinity Mentoring, led by Rev. Dr. David Jefferson, Sr., at Metropolitan Baptist Church. The church, located at 149 Springfield Avenue, Newark, New Jersey, will host the event from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
The event will feature informational sessions on how you can become a mentor and inspire African-American boys to achieve their maximum potential, empower their communities, and develop their purpose and leadership.
In addition to the NYC/NJ drive scheduled this weekend, Steve Harvey Mentoring Program’s Young Men National Camp will take place in Dallas for June 11-16th.
Designed for young men who live in single female-headed households between the ages of 13-18 and enrolled in grades 8-11, the program is designed to empower these young men for successful futures and instilling in them the principles of manhood, leadership, and community empowerment.
