Stepping is an art form with a meaning that stems deeper than rhythmic foot pounds to the floor, hand claps, and saucy finger snaps. It’s entertaining, yes, but for Black culture the melodic demonstration is a calling seeded in the roots of our ancestry.

And for a group of young women, it will hopefully become the skill that allows them to escape from their current destructive environment.

In a new documentary, set against the social unrest in Baltimore, Step follows the senior year of a girls’ high-school step dance team. Surrounded by inner-city blues, each teen is striving to become the first in their family to attend college.

A stand-out at the Sundance Film Festival the film will be released in theaters on August 4.

Featuring Blessin Giraldo, Cori Grainger, Tayla Solomon, Gari McIntyre and Paula Dofat, the nearly three-minute trailer is emotional, inspiring and filled with talent and determination.
