WGN America struck viewing gold last year when it rolled out Underground, an intense drama about enslaved Black Americans who risk it all for freedom. The first season delivered 3 million total viewers weekly, and made history as WGN America’s most-watched original program ever in its first season. Now, the cast and crew are back to do it again.

In season two of Underground, the stakes are even higher. Last year, viewers watched as Noah (Aldis Hodge) and Rosalee (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) fought to reach freedom in the North. This time around, however, they’ll return to the South to help even more of their compatriots break free.

Here’s how WGN America describes the upcoming season:

Season two of the 10-episode, hour-long series follows an unremitting struggle for freedom within a divided America on the brink of civil war, each side vying to enact their own justice.  Set in the aftermath of the Macon 7’s daring attempt to stage the greatest escape in history, this group of American heroes continues on their harrowing journey to freedom, with legendary abolitionist Harriet Tubman blazing the trail.

In addition to Hodge and Smollett-Bell, Underground stars Alano Miller, Christopher Meloni, DeWanda Wise, Amirah Vann, Jasika Nicole, and Aisha Hinds as Harriet Tubman.

Underground returns to WGN America on Wednesday March 8, 2017 at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT
