During this week’s episode of Red Table Talk, Jada Pinkett Smith discussed the family’s reaction when her son, Jaden Smith, began wearing femalecentric clothing.

Pinkett Smith acknowledged the bravery in her son’s fashion choices. “I give Jaden props,” the actress said as she sat with her mother, Adrienne Norris; her daughter, Willow; and her son. She saluted him for “being a Black young man and the son of like an ubermasculine hip-hop star” and still have the will to go against gender norms.

Although she was open to the bold style, the Bad Moms star says her husband, Will Smith, had “his feelings on that, for sure.” She got specific: “I remember Will calling me and being like, ‘Have you talked about this Jaden and him wearing a skirt?’ And I said, ‘Yeah I have. He’s pretty happy about it.'”

Pinkett Smith revealed that her son “talked about wanting to wear skirts to give kids the freedom, to give other people the freedom to think out of the box for themselves and not feel like in doing that that they would be bullied or be attacked in some way.” He added he also did it as a means to look fly.

Jaden’s choice to wear not only skirts but also dresses led to him becoming the face of Louis Vuitton womenswear in 2016. Hear the family talk about what it’s like growing up as one of its members below.
