Alfonso Ribeiro Breaks Down Why a ‘Fresh Prince’ Reboot Wouldn’t Work

The cast of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air are regularly questioned about the possibility of a reboot. Most have hinted that it’s unlikely while still giving fans a bit of hope, but Alfonso Ribeiro is shooting straight in a new interview with PeopleTVs Chatter, saying he doesn’t realistically see a reboot coming to be.

The actor who played Carlton Banks on the classic 90’s sitcom explained that a reboot wouldn’t be possible without James Avery, who played Banks family patriarch, Uncle Phil. Avery died in 2014 at the age of 68.

“I think it’s impossible with James Avery being gone… Without him, everything that Will and Carlton did would mean nothing – it’s a bunch of kids acting stupid. There had to be jeopardy, and the way Uncle Phil was going to handle it was the other side of making what Will and Carlton did work,” explained the America’s Funniest Home Videos host. “Without him, there is no The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air. I’m sure a [reboot] could happen, but I continue to say I think it’s very unlikely.”

In addition to Avery’s character being far too pivotal to the show, Ribeiro thinks fans are allowing their nostalgia to overtake what they actually want to see on television.

“Do we really want to see Will and Carlton in their 40s and 50s? I think people think they want to see that, but I don’t think people really want to see that.”

Ribeiro also joked that he did not think the “Fresh Prince” himself, Will Smith, would sign up for a revival.

“Will ain’t coming back! Listen, you know how much money they don’t have to get Will back? That’s the reality.”
