Anthony Mackie Lands Superhero Role

Captain America: The First Avenger

The amount of African American superheroes who have graced the silver screen is few and far between. Anthony Mackie is the latest actor selected to break that barrier. The 33-year-old will be playing the role of Falcon in the upcoming "Captain America" sequel, a fact confirmed by actor Chris Evans, the film's titular actor, in a recent MTV interview. Evans also praised Mackie's personality and talent in the interview, saying "I love that guy. I'm really happy we got him. We got lucky."

Dubbed "the first African-American superhero" by Stan Lee, who first created the Falcon character in 1969, Falcon has several superpowers, including the ability to fly and a see through the eyes of nearby birds. The amount of screen time that Falcon will receive in the sequel has yet to been seen, but this blockbuster will certainly provide Mackie with a huge leg up to leading man potential. The "Captain America," tentatively titled "Winter Soldier," is set to hit movie theaters in April 2014.
