‘Black Panther’ Is Returning to Theaters for Black History Month

Bangkok, Thailand - February 17, 2018: Beautiful Standee of A Marvel Superhero Movie Black Panther Display at the theater.

Black Panther will return to movie theaters the first week of February to kick off Black History Month, according to The Walt Disney Company.

The announcement was made Monday, just one day after the movie’s cast made history by taking home the 2019 SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

During the acceptance speech, Chadwick Boseman, who played the title character, referenced Nina Simone when describing the limiting spaces for Black entertainers.

Disney wants to combat that lack of representation by providing opportunities for the younger generation. In addition to the Ryan Coogler-directed film being re-released in theaters, the company will also give a $1.5 million grant to support to the United Negro College Fund.

Black Panther is groundbreaking for many reasons, including the rich diversity of voices behind its success,” said Robert A. Iger, chairman and chief executive officer of Disney. “The story also showcases the power of knowledge to change the world for the better, and the importance of ensuring everyone has access to it. We’re proud to provide thousands of free screenings of Black Panther in hopes it will continue to inspire audiences, and to support UNCF with a $1.5 million grant to make the dream of higher education a reality for more students.”

After shattering box office records, the film is nominated for seven Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Costume Design.

Black Panther will return to 250 AMC theaters across the country from Feb. 1 to Feb. 7. For free tickets, visit WeTicketIt.com/BlackPanther.
