Denzel Washington is set to receive the New Dramatists’ 2018 Distinguished Achievement Award according to Deadline. The honor is given to “individuals who have made an outstanding artistic contribution to the theatre community.”
Although two-time Academy Award winner (and eight-time acting nominee) Washington is known for his big-screen performances, he’s also had a successful run on Broadway. He played the leading role in Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun and in August Wilson’s Fences. He earned a Tony Award for the latter and would go on to star in the silver screen adaptation of the play in 2016, which he also directed. He is set to return to Broadway this spring in George C. Wolfe’s production of Eugene O’Neill’s The Iceman Cometh.
In discussing Washington’s honor, New Dramatists’ Artistic Director Emily Morse said the actor is regarded as “a respected, consummate artist, and for this reason, we wish to honor him at this year’s luncheon.”
Morse added, “Mr. Washington has earned his career status through hard work and excellence. He’s a professional actor who continues to pursue artistic and career challenges, like undertaking the plays of August Wilson, an alumnus of New Dramatists, and Eugene O’Neill, for example, and it’s his fearless risk-taking that connects him to what the playwrights working at New Dramatists and the collaborators who support their processes seek every day.”
Washington will receive his honor at the New Dramatists 69th Annual luncheon on May 15. The Iceman Cometh opens on April 26.
