Dwyane Wade surprised Waffle House hero James Shaw Jr. on Wednesday’s The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
Shaw, 29, spoke to Ellen DeGeneres about confronting Waffle House shooter Travis Reinking and wrestling the gun away before Reinking fled.
Shaw said that other than his four-year-old daughter, the thing he loves the most is basketball and that Wade was his favorite player.
“I like the way he carries himself off the court,” he told DeGeneres. “Well, let’s see how he carries himself out here,” she said before Wade walked out and embraced Shaw.
“When you get an opportunity to sit across from someone, they say, ‘What would you say to him?’” Wade said. “And I look at you — and I know you don’t want to be called a hero — but I look at you as an American hero. I would sit across from you, as I am now, and say obviously how brave you are, but for me, when I sit down with my kids, and I sit down and talk to them about role models, who I want them to look up to, I would tell them to go look up to James Shaw Jr. So, thank you.”
Shaw, who’s been reluctant to be called a hero following the shooting, has raised thousands of dollars for the families of the victims.
