On November 4, EBONY magazine celebrated our annual Power 100 list with a star-studded fête in New York City. Sponsors including Nationwide Insurance, United Airlines and Chevrolet joined the Johnson Publishing Company family in toasting some of the most influential African-Americans in the country with a Motown-themed evening—a nod to Motown founder Berry Gordy, recipient of EBONY’s 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award.

Guests were treated to performances by The Jacksons, one of the biggest acts in the history of pop music, as well as the cast of Broadway’s Motown: The Musical and internationally celebrated jazz pianist Elew.

The master of ceremonies for the evening was Hollywood renaissance man Nick Cannon, also a 2013 Power 100 honoree. Cannon joined celebrity turntable master DJ Kiss on the wheels of steel for the after party. Award winning chef, author and Power 100 honoree Marcus Samuelsson, owner of the Red Rooster in Harlem, inspired the special menu for the evening, including short ribs in maple wine sauce, smoked collards, sweet potato tarta and chocolate bread pudding dessert.

Attendees included the Rev. Al Sharpton, entrepreneur Magic Johnson, actress LaLa Anthony, the New York Knicks’ Tyson Chandler, Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr., Victor Cruz of the New York Giants, director Lee Daniels and choreographer Bill T. Jones.

“The EBONY Power 100 speaks volumes about the diversity of our accomplishments and the power of our collective influence across virtually every spectrum of society,” said Amy DuBois Barnett, editor-in-chief of EBONY. “We are thrilled to honor these exceptionally talented people who have inspired and enthralled us, and who have helped to shape our lives.”
