Nicki Minaj. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Idris Elba. Lester Holt. Ta-Nehisi Coats. Lin-Manuel Miranda. Priyanka Chopra. We are all about excellence, so we are doubly excited to see the numbers of Black people and other people of color who made Time’s annual 100 most influential people list.

The Rock was stoked about the honor, posting on Instagram in part: “evicted at 14, broke by 24, but regardless of how tough things got, I always felt if I worked harder and smarter than the next guy- I’d have a real shot at life.”

Who else made the list?

President Barack Obama, Kendrick Lamar, Steph Curry, Taraji P. Henson and Usain Bolt are amongst the other Black folk who made it in. All things considered, this is quite a diverse list.

How were these fine folk selected? According to TIME editor Nancy Gibbs:

“They each embody a breakthrough: they broke the rules, broke the record, broke the silence…”
