Gabby Douglas Wins Olympic Spot

Gabby Douglas

Teenage gymnast Gabby Douglas stood as fans gave her a standing ovation on Sunday for winning the U.S. Olympic trials. The 16-year-old secured her spot on the U.S. Olympic team headed for London, coming in first ahead of favorite Jordyn Wieber. "Everyone was telling me you have this great potential and you can be on top," Douglas said. "I didn't believe that, but everyone was just telling me to believe in myself. I did and I'm kind of up on top and it's amazing."

Along with Douglas and Wieber, the team includes Aly Raisman, Kyla Ross, and McKayla Maroney, making what many believe is the strongest U.S. gymnastic team since 1996. They are favored to win the gold.

“Our goal is that both teams are on the podium in London, and I think we have a very good chance of seeing that happen,” Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics, said.
