British heartthrob Idris Elba is about to bring Stephen King’s fantasy series The Dark Tower to life. In the film, the Dark Tower is an expansive structure that encompasses all of space and time. It includes different worlds and realities. Elba stars as Roland Deschain, an explosive gunslinger who is the last living member of a knightly order who must protect the tower at all cost. Unfortunately, the Man in Black (Matthew McConaughey), who is apparently worse than the devil himself, wants to use his dark magic to bring the tower down.
Man in Black’s aim is to collapse all of the worlds within the tower on top of one another in order to free his master, the Crimson King, who is trapped in the tower. And yet, Man in Black realizes he can’t quite dismantle the Dark Tower and shatter its dimensions on his own. He decides to harness other people’s powers, including a boy with a psychic ability known as a “shine.” What he doesn’t count on is the fact that Roland will protect the boy at any cost, because it means protecting the very world that we live in. The Dark Tower is the first film from the planned trilogy of King’s epic work. The film will debut in theaters on Aug. 4. Watch the trailer below.
