Gina Prince-Bythewood is set to direct the Spider-Man spin-off, Silver & Black, making her the first Black woman to EVER direct a superhero movie.

Based on the Marvel characters Silver Sable and Black Cat (a.k.a. Felicia Hardy). Marvel’s Silver & Black tells the story of a mercenary, Silver Sable who has a company that hunts down war criminals. Meanwhile, Black Cat is a burglar with acrobatic prowess who dated Peter Parker before turning against him and forming her own crime ring. The original script for Silver & Black was written by Christopher Yost, the man behind 2013’s Thor: The Dark World, so it’s now up to Prince-Bythewood to rewrite it. Just FYI, this film won’t be connected to this summer’s Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Prince-Bythewood is known for films such as Love & Basketball, and Beyond the Lights, so we’re definitely excited to see how her perspective as a Black woman will lend beautifully to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

This won’t be the Shots Fired director’s first foray into the superhero genre. She directed the pilot episode of Freeform’s forthcoming series, Cloak & Dagger which is also set to debut next year.

Silver & Black will out before you know it. Sony has already set an October 2018 release date set. Until we know more about the film’s details and cast, you can check out the gorgeous trailer for Freeform’s Cloak & Dagger below

Honestly, we couldn’t be more thrilled for Prince-Bythewood whose work constantly speaks for itself. Until Silver & Black drops, you can check out Wonder Woman helmed by Patty Jenkins and await the debut of Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther and Ava DuVernay’s $100 million dollar film, A Wrinkle in Time.
