“Rowling loves Black Hermione,” said Harry Potter creator J. K. Rowling herself via @jk_rowling, in a tweet she composed this morning around sunrise. Summer 2016 marks the return of the franchise, as the Palace Theatre in London debuts Harry Potter and the Cursed Child starring 45-year-old Noma Dumezweni cast as Potter’s famous old classmate, Hermione Granger. Based on a story by Rowling and written by Jack Thorne, this eighth installment of the Potter series brings the characters into adulthood. Potter will be a married father of three kids, working at the Ministry of Magic. And Hermione Granger will be Black.

“Canon: brown eyes, frizzy hair and very clever. White skin was never specified,” tweeted J. K. Rowling, who would know. South African-born actress Noma Dumezweni moved to England with her parents as a child, and has appeared in a dozen London theater productions.
