The #OscarsSoWhite hashtag may no longer be burning up our collective timelines, but the discussion about the lack of Hollywood diversity— and the broken system that caused it— is still very much top of mind for Black creators and consumers.
The foolery continues.
In recent days, we learned that Facebook advertising of “Straight Outta Compton” had a Black and White version. While African American users were targeted with the story of N.W.A., White users were shown a teaser that showed the rise of the allegedly more White folk-familiar Ice Cube and Dr. Dre.
We’ve also seen another example of Whitewashing go down in flames with the spectacular smiting of “Gods of Egypt” with deities of the Continent portrayed by the likes of Nikolaj Coster-Waldau aka “Jaime Lannister” from “Game of Thrones.”)
It’s perfect timing for the launch of “Fast Forward,” EBONY.com and African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA)’s video roundtable series featuring the true movers and shakers of color in front of, and behind, the camera. We start with “The Creatives” featuring “Dear White People” producer Effie Brown; Black & Sexy TV co-founder Numa Perrier; Code Black Entertainment (“Perfect Match”) founder, CEO and President Jeff Clanagan; as well as the director of the LA Film Festival and film producer pioneer Stephanie Allain, of “Hustle and Flow and “Beyond the Lights.”
Johnson Publishing’s Vice President and Head of Digital Editorial Kyra Kyles co-moderates the lively and no-holds-barred conversation with AAFCA Co-founder and President Gil Robertson.
Watch this no-hold barred lively and solutions-focused discussion, the first of four which will engage different members of the creative community including actors, representative and the gurus behind new distribution platforms. Then throw your two cents in on social via #fastforward with @ebonymag and @theaafca.
