Home Video Shows Aretha Franklin Singing Despite Her Illness

In honor of Aretha Franklin’s life, her granddaughter, Victorie Franklin, 17, shared a moving video of the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer singing and playing the piano just six months before her untimely passing.

“I have many memories of me coming into her home and she would be playing the piano and singing,” the young girl wrote. “Words can’t describe the pain I’m feeling, but God is telling me that she is at peace. Today we lost an icon, a legend, but today I lost my grandma.”

The video had the timestamp of Mar. 17, 2018, a more than a week before the Queen of Soul’s 76th birthday, and nearly five months before she died after battling pancreatic cancer. “I love u and imma make u proud,” the 17-year-old ended her message.

Victorie, who was gifted with her grandmother’s singing gene, is featured on the “Respect” singer’s unreleased album and the two spoke with Click on Detroit about the project back in April. Stevie Wonder mentioned working with Aretha on a new project as close as two months ago during his CBS interview the day after her passing.

A public memorial service for the icon will reportedly be held on Aug. 29-30 at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.
