Idris Elba

Idris Elba may not be playing a Black James Bond anytime soon. The British actor just scored the starring role in Netflix’s Turn Up Charlie, according to Variety.

The first season will be eight half-hour episodes. The show was co-created by Elba along with known TV producer Gary Reich. It takes inspiration from Elba’s life as it chronicles the life of a struggling DJ, Charlie. Elba outside of his acting career is an accomplished DJ in the U.K. As Charlie is on the verge of success he somehow becomes the nanny for already famous best friend’s daughter.

The series will be executive produced by Elba, Reich and Tristram Shapeero. Elba’s Green Door Pictures and Reich’s Brown Eyed Boy Productions will co-produce the comedy series. It will be directed by Matt Lipsey and Shapeero. The writing team will be made up of female writers Femi Oyeniran, Laura Neal and Victoria Asare-Archer.

Production for the comedy series will start in May in the U.K.
