“Independence Day 2” Coming Soon?

Director Roland Emmerich made millions with Will Smith as the star of his sci-fi summer blockbuster "Independence Day," and now fans of the action-adventure are in for a treat. Sixteen years later, the disaster filmmaker is throwing around the idea of working on a sequel. "I can tell you that Roland and I have been working together for the first time in 11 years and we're very excited about the idea of doing [Independence Day 2]," Dean Delvin told The Hollywood Reporter. "Whether or not we can make this happen, if we can get all the pieces to come together, that's gonna be challenging." Those "major pieces' include Will Smith, Vivica A. Fox, Jeff Goldblum, and Bill Pullman.

The original opened on July 3, 1996, pulling in $50.2 million domestically. To date, it has grossed $817.4 million worldwide and serves as Will Smith's highest grossing movie domestically, earning $306.2 million, and establishing him as a box office icon. While there's no official timeline for the Independence Day sequel, you can catch Will and his young son, Jaden, together in M. Night Shyamalan's "After Earth," which will be released summer 2013.
