Insecure star and budding industry juggernaut, Issa Rae, can now add that superhero bag to her bank account and resume.

The Hollywood Reporter just broke the news that the wildly successful multi-hyphenate has joined the cast of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2, which is the upcoming sequel to 2018’s Oscar-winning animated feature. Rae, 36, will voice Jessica Drew, better known to comic book stans as Spider-Woman.

For the uninitiated, Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman was given her powers via genetic tampering by her father as a child. Upon being a superhero in the Marvel comic universe, she has gone on to work as a Hydra spy, a private detective, and member of such elite crews as Strikeforce and the Order of the Web. With details obviously scarce, this Order of the Web could factor into a tie-in to the “Spider-Verse” already created by the first film.

Rae will join returning voice actors Shameik Moore (Miles Morales) and Hailee Steinfeld (Gwen Stacy/Spider-Gwen), while Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson onboard as a directing trio. Producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller return also credited as writers on the screenplay, along with David Callaham.

“Since the third grade, I’ve loved Spider-Man, comic books, memorabilia, everything,” Issa Rae told Variety in February. This will be one of her first stints as a voice actor; she previously “appeared” in two episodes of Netflix’s BoJack Horseman, playing a therapist who was not revealed at any point in the story. Whether or not any of these attributes for Jessica Drew or input by Issa Rae has made it into the screenplay remains to be seen, but Into the Spider-Verse 2 does open up the idea of exploring parts of Marvel that the MCU and television shows have ignored over the course of the studios’ success.

Issa Rae is currently finalizing production on the fifth and final season of Insecure. Robin Thede’s A Black Lady Sketch Show, which Rae executive produces, was just renewed for a third season and her next few projects involve the docuseries Seen & Heard for HBO, the unscripted series Sweet Life, the hip-hop comedy Rap Sh*t, and the in-development reboot of Perfect Strangers through her Hoorae production company.

The Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse sequel is scheduled to debut on Oct. 7, 2022.
