John Legend told his 12 million Twitter followers on Monday that he isn’t the greatest swimmer.

“I can’t really swim,” Legend tweeted. “Today I took my first swim lesson since I was like 5.”

The EGOT winner isn’t the only member of his family to get a late start on swimming. Legend said his father learned at a much older age as well.

“My dad learned in his 60’s so I feel like I’m ahead of schedule,” he added.

After the 40-year-old’s revelation, several fans were in disbelief and others shared their own late start into swimming.

Legend retweeted one user who humorously asked, “So what happened when your head was under water? Did you breathe fine? Was it all a lie?!” The question referenced lyrics to the singer-songwriter’s chart-topping ballad “All of Me,” which was dedicated to his wife, Chrissy Teigen.

Legend said his two young children began learning to swim months ago.
