Ryan Coogler, Shaka King, and Charles D. King will develop an original feature film that has ties to the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection.
Not resting on their laurels or on the success of Judas and the Black Messiah, the team of Ryan Coogler, Shaka King, and Charles D. King are developing an original feature film about American political insurrection. While plot details are being kept stealthily under wraps, Variety reports that Lil Rel Howery is also a part of the producers behind this already highly anticipated project.
The all-Black producing team will divvy up credits with Shaka King and Coogler utilizing Proximity, while Charles D. King’s Macro will partner up with Howery. King, who also wrote Judas and the Black Messiah with The Lucas Bros., will co-write the script and is on the lookout to build out the writing team.
The hot-loaded term, “American political insurrection,” already conjures up images of Trumpterian masses who caused the events that led up to the storming of the United States Capitol on Jan. 6. More than 100 people were injured and several died, including members of the Capitol police force. As mentioned above, anticipation is high for this project already, as Black Messiah, which Shaka King also directed, snagged six Oscar nominations, winning two, and made history as the first time an all-Black producing team was recognized in the Best Picture category.
No comments have come out from anyone and their respective banners, but Coogler could change things up as he began production on Black Panther 2: Wakanda Forever last week.
Also, with Proximity’s next release—Space Jam 2: A New Legacy, inching closer to its July 16 opening, Coogler could have more details to share about this project.
