Twenty years ago, Theodore Witcher debuted his first and only feature film, Love Jones, and Black romance hasn’t been the same since. Set in Chicago and starring Nia Long and Larenz Tate as Nina Mosely and Darius Lovehall respectively, Love Jones is a gorgeous film about two 20-somethings trying to transform their casual romance into something real and long lasting.

Earlier this year at the American Black Film Festival Honors hosted by BET, Power star Omari Hardwick paid tribute to the film by reciting Darius’ infamous “Brotha to the Night” poem and bringing the cast and crew on stage to present them with an award. Watch that video below.

It’s been 20 years since the film’s debut, and in celebration of its landmark anniversary, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences hosted the event “In the Mood for Love Jones.” Presented at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, Calif., director Witcher, Long and Tate, as well as cast members Isaiah Washington, Lisa Nicole Carson and Bill Bellamy were also in attendance.

The conversation was moderated by Academy Award-winning director Barry Jenkins (Moonlight). You can watch the entire conversation below, which covers topics that include Witcher’s start in Hollywood, how Tate and Long approached playing Darius and Nina, the film’s iconic soundtrack, look and feel, and so much more.

Nia Long is currently filming the movie Life in A Year, which also stars Terrence Howard and Jaden Smith. Larenz Tate will next be seen in the hilarious comedy Girls Trip, which will premiere July 23.
