Lupita Nyong’o on Kinky Hair Being Deemed ‘Uncivilized’

Actress Lupita Nyong’o is almost always seen rocking her natural hair anytime she is in front of a camera. The cover star of the September 2018 issue of Porter magazine revealed she wears her kinky coils because wants young people with hair textures like hers to learn “self-acceptance.”

“My hair is something that, historically, has been shunned,” the Oscar winner said about the negative stereotypes surrounding Black hair.

“I mean, how often do you hear, ‘You can’t get a job with hair like that’?” Even today with the efforts of the entertainment industry to become more diverse and inclusive the view of Black hair hasn’t changed much. “Natural, African, kinky hair — it’s often been painted as uncivilized or wild.”

For that reason, it is important for Nyong’o to wear her in its natural state or in hairdos that are suitable for her hair type.

Last year, Nyong’o spoke out after her hair was edited on the cover of U.K. magazine Grazia. She shared the original photos along with the photoshopped version and wrote, “Being featured on the cover of a magazine fulfills me as it is an opportunity to show other dark, kinky-haired people, and particularly our children, that they are beautiful just the way they are. I am disappointed that @graziauk invited me to be on their cover and then edited out and smoothed my hair to fit their notion of what beautiful hair looks like.”

To help with the representation of dark skin and kinky hair, the Black Panther actor has written a children’s book, Sulwe, which will be published by Simon & Schuster in 2019.  “I wanted to get to kids before they reach an age where the world is telling them they are not as valuable.”
