It seems that the casket isn’t quite closed on Tyler Perry’s iconic femme senior character yet. The prolific creator and producer, whose character has helped him to gross over $1 billion at the box office, is planning to release a prequel movie with Netflix called A Madea Homecoming.

Perry will direct, write, and star in his 12th movie, with Will Areu and Mark Swinton joining in on producing.

With no plot details available, Perry will shoot this project at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta, where the multi-hyphenate films his vast array of television shows and cinematic productions.

First introduced onstage in the 1999 play I Can Do Bad All by Myself, the character has gone on to be at the center of other theater productions, a dozen of films, TV shows, and even a book. Though obviously not the case, Perry reportedly said that Madea would be making her final appearance in the 2019 Lionsgate feature A Madea Family Funeral, which made $75 million at the global box office.

A Madea Homecoming looks to build on Perry’s working relationship with Netflix following 2020’s release of A Fall From Grace, which was watched by 39 million households in its first month. Also in his upcoming slate of work is A Jazzman’s Blues, which he is going to wear multiple hats as writer, director, and executive producer. That film stars Joshua Boone and Solea Pfeiffer, and unravels 40 years of secrets and lies in a tale of forbidden love and family drama soundtracked by juke joint blues in the deep South.

The wave of Perry-created content comes after his first look deal with Lionsgate expired in 2014 with no renewal after a six-year stretch.
