Mahershala Ali has become only the second Black actor to receive two competitive Academy Awards in his career, following Denzel Washington.

Ali won Best Supporting Actor for Green Book during the 2019 Academy Awards. The respected thespian took home his first trophy in 2017 for Best Supporting Actor in the Barry Jenkins film Moonlight.

Washington won for Best Supporting Actor in 1990 (Glory) and Best Actor in 2002 (Training Day).

As of 2019, 42 actors and actresses have received two or more Academy Awards in acting categories, with Katherine Hepburn leading the way with four wins. Jack Nicholson, Meryl Streep, Walter Brennan and Daniel Day-Lewis have three wins each while actors such a Marlon Brando, Robert DeNiro, Dustin Hoffman and others have two wins under their belts.

Sidney Poitier won the 1964 Best Actor Oscar for Lillies of the Field, and an honorary award in 2002.
