Packer proposed to Carey in January 2016, but the couple ended their relationship in October of that year. Following the split, however, the singer continued to wear the ring. She was able to keep the massive rock after a financial settlement was reached between the former couple.

According to reports a business manager to the “We Belong Together” singer, quietly sold the ring for $2.1 million to a jeweler in Los Angeles. A source told the news publication, the jeweler was required to sign a nondisclosure agreement regarding the sale.

Due to the difference in its rumored value and the payout, many are speculating that Carey ditched the ring because she is in some alleged financial crisis. However, her publicist denies the claim, asserting the singer just wants to leave negativity behind her. “Mariah has been very vocal recently about her choice to move forward in her life surrounded by positivity. That requires leaving emotional and material baggage behind, including an old engagement ring from an ex-boyfriend.”

When it comes to speculation that Carey is low on cash, a source close to her says the ring is worth less than what hit media headlines and uses Carey’s ownership of her music catalog, a slew of homes and her successful Vegas residencies to negate the claims.
