Michael Baisden Petitions Cut

Michael Baisden

News of 98.7 KISS-FM closing its doors hit hard for many New Yorkers last week, as the historic R&B station merged with rival WBLS. Both stations have been struggling, reflecting a broader trend in the radio world—especially for Black stations throughout the country. Simultaneously, the merger cut Tom Joyner, Keith Sweat, and Michael Baisden from the regular line-up, keeping Steve Harvey’s morning show.

Baisden isn’t having it, though. The disc jockey is urging his fans to petition on Change.org and call WBLS to voice their support. Fellow ousted host Joyner said it best in a statement on Friday. “I am saddened that an important Black voice is going silent in New York City, especially during this important election year. Although social media currently gets a lot of credit and rightfully so, nothing can replace the role black radio plays in empowering, informing and entertaining Black people.”
