Twenty-sixteen was a banner year for Black TV and film, and from the looks of things, 2017 will continue to build upon the awesome trend. With shows like Underground, Empire, Blackish and Shonda Rhyme’s Thursday night offerings currently ruling the airwaves and series like Insecure, Atlanta, Power, The Carmichael Show and Queen Sugar due to return soon, Black folks are prospering on network and cable TV. But we’re also winning over on the streaming services as well with Netflix rolling out a slew of shows, including Dear White People, the Get Down, and an adaptation of Spike Lee’s She’s Gotta Have It. But there’s one quirky show fans have really come to love: Michaela Coel’s Chewing Gum.

Created by Coel, Chewing Gum is a British comedy that centers on Tracey (Coel), “An energetic young woman emerging from a delayed adolescence against the backdrop of a vibrant East London estate.” After breaking away form her super sheltered upbringing, 24-year-old Tracey decides she wants to experience all that life has to offer, including losing her virginity. The decision leads Tracey down a hilarious–and extremely awkward–path filled with life lessons and a whole lot of laughs.

Since premiering in the U.K. back in 2015 and migrating to Netflix, the show has become a hit with folks on both sides of the Pond. The second season hit the streaming service earlier this month just a short time after it wrapped up its run on Britain’s Chanel 4, and fans have already devoured the series’ six episodes, and are hungry for more. But there’s one catch: Coel is the show’s sole writer and recently took to Twitter to explain why each season only includes a handful of episodes.

As Coel mentioned, typically shows have a team of writers to bring the series to life, but Coel not only stars in Chewing Gum, but she’s the only writer as well. It’s a rare move, but it further illustrates how brilliant the award winning playwright, poet, and actress truly is. Lover of #BlackGirlMagic? Michaela Coel has it in spades!
