Michelle Williams is defending her fiancé, Chad Johnson, who was called out by fans of the singer for delivering what appeared to be a low blow regarding her mental health struggles.

In a preview clip for episode two of their OWN series, Chad Loves Michelle, the Destiny’s Child member shared that during an argument, she brought up their racial differences, which led to Johnson sarcastically asking if she’d taken her meds.

Fans of the Broadway actress immediately called out Johnson for being insensitive to his future bride’s depression. Williams herself is now defending her man, saying the public shouldn’t judge him so harshly over one sound bite from one fight.

“That conversation that we were talking about happened the night before. It was not filmed, so people don’t know what I was saying to Chad for Chad to be like, ‘Did you take your meds?’ Now, I didn’t like when he said that. But people also did not . . .  hear when he apologized,” Williams revealed on Frank & Wanda in the Morning.

She went on, “I think that’s what irritates us. We are a sound-bite generation. We won’t take the time and the effort to actually watch a whole episode. We will take a sound bite and we judge a person, we judge a show, we judge a relationship based off of one little clip. He apologized, and I apologized for cutting. I got my momma in me; I can cut you with my words.”

During a recent sit-down with EBONY, Johnson shared that learning to care for his soon-to-be wife’s mental health has been a process for him.

“To be honest with you, I had to learn, and I’m not saying that I’ve got it all down yet. It’s been a learning process, and I’ve had to exercise and learn a ton of patience. At the same time, I’m asking a lot of questions and educating myself. Our therapist has really been a huge help for me to understand the medical side of depression. It’s truly a mental health disease.”

Johnson also spoke of how their shared love for Christ has strengthened their relationship.

“We both have the same constitution in life, which is to love God with all of our hearts, love people, serve people and let the platforms we’ve been given be for service and not for selfishness. Faith has kept us, but it also has given us a rallying point.”
